    Hi, my name's Bill Hammons, I'd like to be your next Congressman, and here's a little bit about myself:

    I was born in Germany in the early Seventies to a career Army officer, and moved to the States with my family when I was three. I was raised along with an older sister by a single mother in Odessa, Texas from the age of five, and graduated from Permian High School of Friday Night Lights fame in 1993 (no, I didn't play football; in fact, the only sport I think I've ever shown any talent for is long-distance running (see below)).

    I did show an early interest in writing fiction (I still have my first short story, written at the age of 10 on the "Yellow Jacket, Tools and Service" stationary of my grandfather's employer). To further my writing career with connections in the publishing industry, I declined an acceptance to the Ivy League-level University of Texas Plan II program, and instead attended college in New York. Majoring in English and American Literature at New York University turned out to be a good choice (to paraphrase Barbara Mandrell, I was NYU when NYU wasn't cool), but I still had to get a second job after graduation in addition to my job of waiting tables at EJ's diner and pay off those hefty student loans (not to mention pay the $92 weekly rent on my 128-sq-foot Manhattan apartment).

    Thus I started work as the Permissions Assistant at Henry Holt and Company three days after graduation. About a week after I began employment, my supervisor informed me that she happened to be leaving for an extended period, and I found myself running the department six weeks into my publishing career. That turned out to be a good thing for both myself and Henry Holt, seeing as how I was eventually processing permission requests on a same-day basis when the industry standard was six weeks.
