A:
The Unity Party was founded on November 4, 2004 by myself and several other
former members of "Runners for [Wes] Clark." I'm the chairman of the party, which now has a presence in 23 states.
Q:
Hammons, you've taken a strong stance on the environment (not to mention fiscal responsibility) with your support for a substantive
carbon revenue measure. What have you done to practice what you preach and reduce your own household's greenhouse emissions?
A:
Glad you asked. I recently replaced my 2000 Ford Explorer with a Ford Escape hybrid, and use 13-watt replacement bulbs (instead of
standard 60-watt bulbs) among other things.
Q:
You seem to do an awful lot of literal running, in addition to running for office. Why do you run so much and how do you have
time for both?
A:
I run because I enjoy the outlet of running, and I'm a firm believer in doing something right if you're going to do it at all (I'm a
veteran ultramarathoner and award-winning marathoner). I find that a run first thing in the morning with my dog helps to bring the rest of
the day into focus, is a great stretch of time for meditation on decisions that need to be made, and gives me loads of energy that more
than makes up for the time spent on the trails. I've also found running to be a great political fund-raising technique (stay tuned for
future developments!).
